Earnings at each career stage

Newcomer (0–50,000 monthly listeners): 0–20,000 ₽ a month. Streaming brings pennies; concerts pay a share of the bar or nothing at all. The task at this stage is not money but a catalogue and the first core audience.

Mid-level (50,000–300,000 listeners): 40,000–80,000 ₽ a month. Paid club shows appear (2–4 a month), along with donations and first integrations. Streaming brings 10,000–30,000 ₽.

Regional star (300,000–1 million listeners): 80,000–500,000 ₽ a month. Concert fees grow to 70,000–150,000 ₽, and corporate shows start – they often bring more than a whole month of streaming.

Top level: from 1 million ₽ a month. Tours, festivals, big brand contracts and syncs. Streaming is real money here (millions of streams), but still not the main line.

Why "living off streaming" is a trap

To make 100,000 ₽ a month from Yandex Music streams alone, an artist needs roughly 1.9–4.8 million streams a month (at 21–54 ₽ per 1,000 before the distributor's fee) – the level of a noticeable hit. The same audience converted into 3–4 concerts and donations brings the same money with 200,000–300,000 listeners. Streaming is a shop window and fuel for the algorithms; the money is in the live audience. That is why "release regularly and perform" beats "wait for one track to blow up". The rates of every platform are compared in music streaming services in Russia.

How to reach a steady 100,000 rubles a month

The formula from the label's practice: a catalogue of 10+ tracks, 2–4 paid shows a month, a donating community and one integration. It takes regular releases (every 4–8 weeks), systematic short-form content (VK Clips and TikTok) and a person who handles booking and negotiations – usually an artist manager.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a beginner artist earn in Russia?

Usually 0–20,000 ₽ a month in the first year. Streaming brings pennies, so early income comes from concerts for a share, donations and small commissions. Steady money comes with a catalogue and an audience.

How much does 1 million streams pay in Russia?

On Yandex Music 21,000–54,000 ₽ before the distributor's fee. Apple Music pays more – 150–250 ₽ per 1,000, so 150,000–250,000 ₽ for the same million.

What brings a musician the most money?

Once there is an audience – live shows and corporate events: one corporate show often equals months of streaming royalties. Top artists add brand contracts and syncs.

Do artists in Russia need to register for taxes?

Yes, with regular income: self-employment (4–6%) works up to 2.4 million ₽ a year, beyond that a sole proprietorship on the simplified 6% system. Platforms and clients increasingly work only with registered artists.
